D2D chapters seek to reduce student hunger within campus. Each chapter addresses the specific needs of its student population; thus, each chapter achieves this shared goal differently. We have
established campus food pantries and host a meal donation program called the One Meal Initiative.
The One Meal Initiative, first launched at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in coalition with UAB administration and Sodexo. In March 2016, Sodexo's generous support of our One Meal Initiative program has been publicly recognized as a primary reason for UAB's decision to renew Sodexo's contract. Read the article here. Our partnership with Sodexo is the first and only of this kind.
In addition to aiding students facing food insecurity, we strive to increase awareness of this relatively unknown problem that plagues universities across the nation. Our publicity efforts include news coverage. For more information see D2D In the News
Our awareness campaigns have informed college students and the surrounding communities about student food insecurity and the resources available to help these students. Once the general public learned about this issue, they then donated to help affected students. Our advocacy efforts also seek to inform students experiencing food insecurity that their situation is not a normal part of college. We provide these students with the information they need to access the resources specially designed to help them.
